We believe that parents are the most important teachers and role models a child will ever have. This is especially true when families are struggling through a divorce or separation.

Seen through a child’s eyes, separation or divorce is experienced as a profound loss – akin in some cases to the trauma associated with the unexpected death of a loved one. In fact, most children go through a post-divorce mourning period that includes the following stages: denial, anger, a period where they try getting their parents back together, depression, and finally acceptance.

The healing process is made especially difficult when:

• Parents fight over custody, parenting or child support issues,
• One parent withdraws from the child’s life,
• The child must move or change schools,
• There is a history of domestic violence, substance abuse, or child abuse.

The best predictors of how well a child will do in the future are based on the level of commitment one or both parents show to:

• Determining how their separation or divorce has impacted their child,
• Managing future divorce or separation conflict in a healthy way,
• Using the strategies and tools needed to promote genuine healing.

The Prevention Network is committed to helping parents access and use the most effective tools available anywhere in the world. To accomplish this, we reviewed the latest research literature, websites, videos, and books and then bundled the most useful strategies and tools into the most useful strategies and tools into our co-parenting program.
